Consequences of breaching Data Protection

EU AI Act

The AI Act is expected to enter into force in 2024, after its adoption by the EU institutions and its transposition by the EU member states.

The AI Act defines AI systems as software that is developed with one or more of the following techniques and approaches: machine learning, logic- and knowledge-based approaches, statistical approaches, or combinations of these. The AI Act also classifies AI systems into four categories, based on their level of risk for the rights and safety of individuals and society: unacceptable risk, high risk, limited risk, and minimal risk.

The AI Act sets out different rules and obligations for the providers, users, and importers of AI systems, depending on their category of risk. The main rules and obligations include:

 

  • Unacceptable risk: AI systems that pose an unacceptable risk for the rights and safety of individuals and society are prohibited

The UK government has also expressed its intention to develop a pro-innovation approach to AI regulation, based on its National AI Strategy and the UK Science and Technology Framework. In March 2023, the government published a white paper titled AI regulation.

  • Appropriate transparency and explainability

 

  • Fairness
